New ICD 10 codes RDN use for reimbursement

October 1, 2024, there were significant additions, revisions and deletions to ICD 10 codes RDNs use for reimbursement. These categories affected were codes used for Type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia, obesity, adults, teens and children and disordered eating.

 

The referring provider will select the appropriate code(s) for the MNT referral as RDNs cannot diagnose. It behooves RDNs and their billing department(s) to be aware of the new codes, as well as to confirm which are billable and not, prior to submitting a claim or providing a superbill.

 

The following are several of the new codes:

1.    Presymptomatic Type 1 Diabetes

E10.A0 Type 1 diabetes mellitus, presymptomatic, unspecified

E10.A1  Type 1 diabetes mellitus, presymptomatic, Stage 1

Multiple confirmed islet autoantibodies with normoglycemia

E10.A2 Type 1 diabetes mellitus, presymptomatic, Stage 2 Confirmed islet autoimmunity with  

dysglycemia

 

2.    Hypoglycemia

E16.A1 Hypoglycemia Level 1            Glucose 55 - 70

E16.A2 Hypoglycemia Level 2            Glucose < or =54

E16.A3 Hypoglycemia Level 3    Glucose Level not specified

      A person is unable to function because of mental or physical changes due to low blood

        glucose

 

3.    Obesity Codes for Adults

E66.811 Obesity, Class 1, BMI 30-34.9

E66.812 Obesity, class 2 BMI 35-39

E66.813 Obesity class 3 BMI 40 +

E66.89 Other obesity not otherwise classified

 

4.    Obesity Codes for pediatrics***  Note these pediatric codes as of 10/23/2024 were not in all insurance, ICD 10 database or Electronic Medical Records.  Check before using.

Z68.541: BMI pediatric 95th percentile to less than 120% of the 95th percentile (Obesity Class 1)

Z68.542: BMI pediatric 120% to less than 140% of the 95th percentile (Obesity Class 2)

Z68.543: BMI pediatric 140% of the 95th percentile and above (Obesity Class 3)

 

May need to use both an E code and Z code when billing.

 

E66.811 Obesity, Class 1, BMI 30-34.9

E66.812 Obesity, Class 2 BMI 35-39.9

E66.813 Obesity Class 3 BMI 40+

 

 

5.    Eating Disorders -unspecified

F50.012  Anorexia nervosa, restricting type, severe  

F50.013  Anorexia nervosa, restricting type, extreme (BMI 15)

F50.014  Anorexia nervosa, restricting type, in remission  

 

7.    Anorexia Nervosa (Binge Eating/Purging Type )

F50.020  Anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type, mild 

F50.021  Anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type, moderate  

F50.022  Anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type, severe 

F50.023  Anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type, extreme

8.    Bulimia Nervosa

F50.21 - Bulimia nervosa, mild

F50.22 - Bulimia nervosa, modérate

F50.25 - Bulimia nervosa, in remission  

 

9.    Binge Eating Disorder

F50.810 ……  Binge Eating Disorder, mild 

F50.811 ……  Binge Eating Disorder, moderate

F50.812 ……  Binge Eating Disorder, severe

F50.813 ……  Binge Eating Disorder, extreme

F50.814 ……  Binge Eating Disorder, in remission
