Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is an EIN?
An Employer identification number (EIN) is also known as a federal tax identification number, and is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. You may apply for an EIN in various ways, and now you may apply online.
2. What is the purpose of EIN?:
The EIN serves a similar administrative purpose as a Social Security Number, (SSN), but for a business entity rather than an individual person. In some cases, such as a sole proprietorship, an SSN may be used as a business Tax ID without applying for a separate EIN, but in order to hire employees or establish business credit, an EIN is required.
3. Why do I need an EIN?
You need an EIN if you have employees, operate as a corporation or partnership, file certain tax returns, withhold taxes on income, other than wages, paid to a non-resident alien, have a Keogh plan, or are involved with certain types of organizations including trusts and estates.
4. How to apply?
Applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue Service.
5. Will my EIN expire?
An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to entities for tax purposes. EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears.
6. Changes in EIN?
If the principal person changes or the address changes fill out a 8022 B to inform the IRS within 60 days of change.
6. What if you close your business?
How to Cancel your EIN and close your IRS business account
Employer identification number – or EIN – assigned to your business is the permanent federal taxpayer identification number for that business. To cancel your EIN and close your IRS business account, you send IRS a letter that includes:
The complete legal name of the business
The business EIN
The business address
The reason you wish to close the account
If you kept the notice that IRS sent you when the EIN was assigned, you should enclose a copy of it with your EIN cancellation letter. Call IRS at 1-800-829-4933 to find out the specific address to send both documents to IRS.
